Turkish authorities have launched an investigation into 19 well-known public figures for suspected drug use, including well-known names from the music, television and social media scenes.
The list of people under investigation includes singers Hadise Açıkgöz and İrem Derici, actresses Demet Evgar and Berrak Tüzünataç, as well as influencers Duygu Özaslan and Derin Talu.
The Istanbul General Prosecutor's Office confirmed that the case has been opened on the basis of the article related to the use of narcotic or stimulant substances, according to the Turkish Penal Code.
There are currently no arrest warrants, but all persons under investigation have been summoned to give statements and undergo toxicology testing through blood tests.
The operation was carried out by the Istanbul Provincial Gendarmerie Command, which accompanied public figures to health centers to take blood samples and then to collect evidence at the authorities' premises.
In addition to the names mentioned above, the list also includes: Ziynet Sali, Kubilay Aka, Kaan Yıldırım, Mert Yazıcıoğlu, Metin Akdülger, Ceren Moray, Özge Özpirinçci, Engin Polat, Dilan Polat, Zeynep Meriç Aral, Birce Akalay and lawyer Feyza Altun.
Irem Derici, who was taken into custody as part of the operation, had recently announced that she would get engaged to her boyfriend, DJ Melih Kunukçu, on October 8.
According to the legislation in force in Turkey, personal use of narcotic substances is not automatically punishable by imprisonment. In such cases, the person may be forced to undergo treatment, rehabilitation or be placed under provisional supervision, depending on the assessments of experts and the prosecution.
The investigations are still in the initial stages and will be based primarily on the results of toxicological analyses and subsequent legal assessments.
