Synthetic silk clothes, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez invest 34 million

Jeff Bezos and his partner Lauren Sánchez have launched the Bezos Fund for the Earth , allocating around 34 million euros to the development of new sustainable materials in the textile industry.

The initiative aims to create alternatives to widely used materials such as cotton and polyester, which require large amounts of resources to produce and have a significant environmental impact. The focus is on biodegradable fibers and synthetic silk without a plastic base.

According to the European Environment Agency, materials such as polyester and viscose are produced from fossil fuels such as oil and coal, and are used extensively in the fast fashion industry and luxury segment. Their main problem remains non-degradability and pollution through microplastics that end up in aquatic ecosystems.

This project aims to develop new fabrics created from alternative sources such as bacteria and agricultural waste, with the potential to transform the way clothing is produced on an industrial scale.

However, experts emphasize that the main challenge remains the high cost and the difficulty of mass application in the market, as the industry often relies on cheaper and more popular materials. Vogue magazine has noted that even when sustainable alternatives exist, the market and consumers tend to choose the most economical options.

In this context, projects for "textiles of the future" are seen as an ambitious step towards a cleaner fashion industry, but still with major challenges ahead for global implementation.
