Javier Bardem confesses: At the peak of success, I felt empty

Renowned Spanish actor Javier Bardem, who became an international figure after his unforgettable role in the film "No Country for Old Men", has recently revealed a completely different side of the experience that accompanied him during that time, that of a difficult battle with depression.

In an interview with The New York Times, Bardem confessed that while filming the film, which would later earn him an Oscar, he was going through one of the darkest periods of his life. "I had ended a long relationship and I felt empty. I wasn't able to experience joy. It's not that I was thinking about dark things, but I was feeling sad, empty," he says.

He says his salvation came in part thanks to the support of his friend and colleague, actor Josh Brolin. "Josh would come over every day, open the curtains, the windows, and take me out for walks. He helped me remember that there was still something beautiful, that I was lucky to be alive," Bardem says gratefully.

Although “No Country for Old Men” brought him worldwide fame and professional success, for Bardem, that period remains fraught with personal challenges. He recalls that while filming in various cities in Texas, he experienced feelings of inadequacy because of the way others saw or treated him. “In Spain I was known, and in cities like New York or Los Angeles I felt comfortable. But in some places in the southern United States, I felt really self-conscious, like never before.”
