FBI issues alert: Be careful of messages you receive on your phone!

An urgent warning has been issued by the FBI to cellphone users after a new wave of SMS scams is circulating, targeting both iPhone and Android users. The messages, which purport to come from the Department of Transportation (DMV), contain alarming phrases like "too much unpaid" and threats of driver's license suspension.

The rise in this type of scam has been described as "alarming", with an increase of over 700% in the last month alone. Users are asked to click on a link that leads to pages that appear official, but are in fact designed to steal personal and financial details.

The FBI's Cybercrime Complaint Center (IC3) has confirmed that the term "excessively unpaid" is common in reports it has received recently, indicating a well-organized network of scammers operating in several US states, including New York, California, Florida, Texas, and Georgia.

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission has also responded, reminding citizens that it never sends text messages or emails about fines or other vehicle-related services. Official communications are limited to appointment reminders.

Authorities recommend that the public not open any links from unsolicited messages and immediately delete any suspicious communications that:

Requests urgent payments or fines,

Pretends to come from state institutions,

Contains suspicious links that mimic government sites,

Uses threatening tones or false urgency.

If you suspect any such message, do not act immediately. Verify through official channels and do not share any personal or banking information.
