Osmani hands over the Presidency: Institutional stability is urgent

The outgoing President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has officially handed over her duties, handing over powers to the Speaker of the Parliament, Albulena Haxhiu, who will exercise the function of president until the election of a new head of state.

During the official ceremony at the Presidency, Osmani emphasized the symbolism of the fact that the position is being passed to a woman, expressing the desire for this line to continue in the future.

" I welcome you, Madam Speaker of the Assembly and, from tonight at midnight, also Acting President of the Republic. It has always been one of my great wishes that, whenever I leave this office, I leave a woman behind. This wish is being fulfilled today and I very much hope that, as the people say, you will also 'lift your leg', so that there will be a woman in this office behind you. With the full confidence that women always show special care towards the institutions and towards every citizen of the Republic ", said Osmani.

She emphasized that leading the state carries great responsibilities, especially in areas such as foreign policy and representing the unity of the country, warning that the task is not easy.

" It will not be an easy task. I have tried both, both as Speaker of Parliament and as Acting President. Being head of state, leading foreign policy and representing the unity of the country are extraordinary responsibilities and require full commitment ," she said.

Osmani called for the Assembly to elect a new president as soon as possible, in order to ensure institutional stability in a sensitive period.

"I very much hope that the Assembly will elect a new president as soon as possible, in order to have institutional stability, at a time when not only our country and the region, but the entire world is facing major crises ," she emphasized.

In conclusion, Osmani guaranteed full support even after leaving office, underlining that commitment to the state is not related to the functions held.

" We will be at your complete disposal, me and the staff, every day and at any time, for whatever this state needs. Commitment to the state is not linked to the positions we hold and will not be in the future ," concluded Osmani.

The position of acting president by Albulena Haxhiu cannot be held for a period longer than six months.

The election of a new president failed early last month precisely because of the lack of an agreement between the parties. Two candidates put forward by the ruling party, Glauk Konjufca and Fatmire Kollçaku-Mullhaxha, were not put to the vote at all due to the lack of a quorum during a session on March 5.
