Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti stated on Friday that he is in contact with the leaders of the Democratic Party of Kosovo and the Democratic League of Kosovo on the issue of electing a president. He announced that meetings with them will take place next week.
The five-year mandate of President Vjosa Osmani ends tomorrow. In these circumstances, the position of acting president is expected to pass to Parliament Speaker Albulena Haxhiu, who comes from the ranks of the Vetëvendosje Movement.
Kurti had previously announced that he would meet with Bedri Hamza and Lumir Abdixhiku. These contacts come at a time when the process for electing the president remains blocked and requires broader political consensus.
On March 25, the Constitutional Court gave MPs 34 days to elect a president. If this does not happen within this deadline, the country will automatically go to early elections.
Two days ago, on April 2, Kurti called for cooperation, stressing that the situation does not allow for new delays and blockades. On the other hand, the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo accused the Vetëvendosje Movement of dragging out the process for its own interests.
There were meetings between Kurti, Hamza and Abdixhiku even before the case ended up in the Constitutional Court. They did not bring any concrete results. On March 5, Vetëvendosje presented two names for president, Glauk Konjufca and Fatmire Mullhaxha-Kollçaku.
The institutional crisis took a different turn after Vjosa Osmani decreed the dissolution of the Assembly on March 6, a day after the failed presidential election. The Constitutional Court later ruled that this decree had no legal effect.
Currently, Vetëvendosje does not have the votes to elect the president on its own. The procedure requires at least 80 deputies present in the chamber and two-thirds of the votes in the first two rounds. In the third round, 61 votes are needed.
The opposition has emphasized that the main burden for securing a majority lies with the ruling party and has called for a political agreement to break the deadlock.
