The Democratic Party of Kosovo has imposed conditions on the Prime Minister and also the leader of Vetëvendosje, Albin Kurti, regarding the presidential election process.
Kurti had previously stated that he was trying to hold a meeting with PDK leader Bedri Hamza. The party has requested that any new initiative on this issue be presented in a formalized manner and in writing.
"An official letter is needed in order to increase the seriousness in dealing with this issue. After this concretization on his part, the issue will be reviewed in the party bodies and then the final position of the PDK will be presented," a statement from the media office of this political force states.
Meanwhile, on Monday, Kurti held a meeting with LDK leader Lumir Abdixhiku, where the focus was on the possibility of finding a joint candidate for president, with the aim of avoiding new elections.
Abdixhiku stressed that LDK remains committed to finding a candidate who can secure the necessary votes, without mentioning specific names, while reiterating that the new president should not come from the ranks of Vetëvendosje.
For his part, Kurti has announced that several names have been discussed, but without providing details, emphasizing that he cannot speak publicly without being certain of an agreement.
Efforts to find a solution come after the decision of the Constitutional Court of Kosovo, which has determined that if a president is not elected by April 28, the country will automatically go to new elections, which must be held within 45 days.
Currently, Kurti and his governing partners have 66 seats in the Kosovo Assembly out of a total of 120. Two-thirds of the votes of the deputies, as well as the same turnout in the hall, are required to elect the president in the first two rounds.
