Presidential election, Kurti begins meetings with party leaders
Albin Kurti

Two days after the end of President Vjosa Osmani's mandate, Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti is launching a series of consultative meetings with political party leaders to discuss the election of the country's new president.

According to official announcements, the first meeting will take place at 11:00 in the Kosovo Assembly with the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), Lumir Abdixhiku, and the deputy leader of this party, Lutfi Haziri. These consultations are considered an attempt to find a consensual candidate who would secure the necessary votes in the Assembly.

Kosovo is currently in a state of institutional deadlock, as the Assembly failed to elect a president within the time frame set by the Constitution. According to constitutional procedures, if a new president is not elected within 30 days of the end of the mandate, the country automatically goes to new elections.

In this context, Prime Minister Kurti has 23 days to reach a political agreement with the parliamentary parties. Media in Kosovo, including RTK and Koha Ditore, report that the lack of inter-party consensus remains the main challenge, especially due to different positions regarding potential candidacies.

Currently, the functions of the president are exercised by the Speaker of the Assembly, Albulena Haxhiu, in accordance with the constitutional provisions for such transitional situations.

The developments are expected to be crucial for the country's institutional stability and for avoiding a new electoral process, which would further deepen political uncertainty.
