Kosovo in early elections, Vjosa Osmani returns to politics as prime minister?
Vjosa Osmani

The Kosovo Assembly failed to elect a new President last night, and Assembly Speaker Albulena Haxhiu said that after the impossibility of finding an agreement, "the Assembly is dissolved" and the country will go to new elections.

Prime Minister Albin Kurti said in the Parliament hall that the opposition had no will to reach an agreement.

"We tried everything," said Kurti, who listed a series of offers he had made to the opposition.

After the dissolution of the Parliament, the first reaction has come from the team of former President Vjosa Osmani.

Osman's advisor, Egnesa Vitija, has published a photo of Osman, as he has written "See you later" .

In his speech yesterday, Prime Minister Albin Kurti attacked Vjosa Osmani, saying that he attempted to dissolve the Parliament with an unconstitutional decree.

Within 45 days, the country must hold elections, which are expected to be held around the beginning of June.

According to the Constitution, the president is elected with two-thirds of the votes in the first two rounds, or with 61 votes in the third round, but with the condition that at least 80 deputies are in the hall. This makes an agreement between the parties necessary, since none of them alone has the necessary votes.

On 4 April 2021, the Assembly of Kosovo elected Vjosa Osmani as president with 71 votes, for a five-year term, as the candidate proposed by the Vetëvendosje Movement. The quorum was also secured by the Democratic League of Kosovo, although the latter was in opposition.

However, the political relationship between Osmani and Kurti changed over the years. As the end of his term approached, Osmani publicly expressed his ambition for a second term, but this time he did not receive the support of Vetëvendosje, which did not propose him as a candidate at all.

Prime Minister Kurti justified this stance by the lack of the necessary votes in the Assembly, arguing that Osmani would not be able to secure the necessary 80 votes in the first stages of voting. In her place, Vetëvendosje proposed other names, such as Glauk Konjufca and Fatime Kollçaku.

The March 5 session, which was also the constitutional deadline for electing the president, failed due to a lack of quorum, after the opposition left the hall. The Speaker of the Assembly, Albulena Haxhiu, declared the session closed, but not concluded.

The following day, on March 6, Osmani decreed the dissolution of the Assembly, arguing that the representatives "decided to take the country to elections . "

She emphasized that "I am fulfilling my constitutional obligation... it is a great misfortune that the deputies did not choose the interest of Kosovo . "

Since that day, Osmani has appeared in Gjilan, Istog, Suhareka, Peja, Gjakova, Deçan, etc., raising the question: is she preparing for a return to the political race?

We will learn this answer in the next 45 days!
