American conflict management expert Edward P. Joseph says Prime Minister Albin Kurti should take advantage of Viktor Orban’s defeat in Hungary and make Kosovo appear in the eyes of the international community as “a source of stability.” To achieve this, Joseph said Kurti must abandon his divisive populism.
" He must build consensus for a new president, avoiding repeated elections that are unnecessary and distracting," he said in an interview with 'REL'.
This, according to Joseph, could give Kosovo new support in Brussels, EU capitals, and Washington.
" Just as the Trump administration is not interested in Vučić's games, it is not interested in Kurti's either. The suspension of the Strategic Dialogue last September was evidence of this ," he added.
Joseph further said that Kurti has the opportunity to change the perception that harms Kosovo, that he is a problematic instigator.
“ He can show that he and Kosovo are valuable partners for the EU, NATO and the US. The loss of Orban deprives Belgrade of its main protector within the EU, while simultaneously weakening Vucic’s allies in Washington and Moscow. And, as has been seen, the Trump administration has not offered Vucic the strong support it has given Orban. Budapest received a one-year extension on Russian oil and gas imports, while Belgrade faced sanctions on NIS, which led to the closure of the refinery in Pancevo. This means that there is now even less reason for Washington to support Vucic ,” he said.
