Voting for the new government, "Reuters": Albania

British media: Albania's image continues to be tarnished by corruption scandals

Today's plenary session in the Albanian Parliament, where the new government and Edi Rama's fourth term as Prime Minister were voted on, has caused a stir in the international media.

The prestigious Reuters agency has dedicated a special article to the developments in Tirana, describing the new mandate as based on a controversial project: the appointment of a minister created by artificial intelligence to fight corruption in public procurement.

The British media also points out that Albania has suffered from corruption scandals and has been considered a center for money laundering by criminal networks, which calls into question the effectiveness of the "technological solutions" offered by the government for deep reforms.

Albania's Parliament confirmed on Thursday a fourth four-year mandate for Prime Minister Edi Rama, who pledged to make the country's membership in the European Union by 2030 his main mission.

Rama, who was the only candidate for the post of prime minister, received 82 votes out of 140 members of parliament. The Socialist Party, which he leads, won a majority for the fourth time in a row in the elections held in May.

"Albania in the EU in 2030 is the center of this mandate. European Albania is the compass that guides us in every aspect of the program and the metronome of the rhythm of every reform we will undertake," Rama told MPs.

However, Albania's image continues to be tarnished by corruption scandals and, according to political analysts, the country has become a hub for criminal networks that launder money from drug and arms trafficking, factors that complicate the objective of EU membership by 2030.

In a surprise move, Rama last week proposed a minister created by artificial intelligence, called “Diella” (meaning “Sun”), to manage and distribute public tenders to private companies, with the stated aim of addressing concerns over corruption.

"I am not here to replace people, but to help them," Diella said in a video speech before the new government was voted in.

But the opposition criticized the appointment as unconstitutional, stressing that the "minister" is not a human being, does not have Albanian citizenship, and could pave the way for a new level of invisible corruption.

"It's true, I have no citizenship, nor any personal ambitions or interests," Diella was quoted as saying.

The opposition also criticized Rama for the lack of a public debate before the vote on the new government.

"This mandate is built on crime, on corruption, on drugs and on the violation of the Constitution and the laws of the country," declared Sali Berisha, leader of the Democratic Party of Albania . /Pamphlet
