As part of the investigations into the "January 21" massacre file, the Special Prosecution Office has sent for expertise all the radio communication material on the Republican Guard channel on January 21, 2011, where four protesters were killed on "Dëshmorët e Kombit" Boulevard during the Berisha government.
Mark Nika, the uncle of Aleks Nika, one of the 4 killed by state weapons, says that this step should have been taken by SPAK a long time ago, and not kept the tape in a drawer.
"From the beginning, the Prosecution did not carry out the investigative actions ordered by the Supreme Court and the Strasbourg Court. It kept the case on the shelf for a year and a half with the claim of where the journalist got the tape. Basically, it should be whether the content is accurate. This expertise is very simple to perform. For me, they have deliberately dragged it out," Mark Nika told "Report TV".
Aleks Nika's uncle suspects that Albanian justice aims not to punish the real perpetrator of the 4 state murders, but secondary actors in the massacre of January 21, 2011.
"We must never allow this case to be closed with innocence, but return it to the Tirana Prosecutor's Office for investigation. They want to channel the investigation with a guard as the culprit and not deal with the person who ordered this case. As far as I can see, they are afraid. Sali Berisha has admitted that the murders were committed by the state, but he said it was out of negligence. Who was the commander at those moments? Ndrea Prendi, who communicated on the radio at times with the head of government", Mark told Nika.
SPAK has been investigating the 4 murders of protesters on the boulevard for almost 2 years, since July 15, 2024, when it registered the case after the Supreme Court ordered the launch of the investigation. Since then, SPAK has questioned a number of former senior state officials who were in office at the time of the incident. Former President Bamir Topi, former Interior Minister Lulzim Basha, and former President Ilir Meta, who was questioned at his request, have appeared before the prosecutors. Former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, also, after a failed attempt to delay his testimony, appeared before SPAK on November 19 of last year. Since then, no new developments have been communicated by the Special Prosecution.
