On the 35th anniversary of the Socialist Party, Edi Rama declared that the Socialists will not demand the release of Erion Veliaj, emphasizing that this is not a party issue. The Prime Minister said that there are no political prisoners in Albania and linked the SP's position to the principles that, according to him, have been followed since the time of Fatos Nano.
Edi Rama has made it very clear that Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj is not in prison just because of the accusations against him, but also because he has lost the support of the Socialist Party.
While Veliaj was out, Rama did not stop praising him. In fact, a few months before his arrest, he kept him close, but the moment SPAK went to his office, the prime minister did not answer his phone. Not only that, but there were blows, an underground war and attempts to remove him from the mayor's office.
Rama ordered his advisors to dismiss him and attempted to hold elections, but it was the Constitutional Court that stopped him. Meanwhile, today, at an event held at the Palace of Congresses in the framework of the 35th anniversary of the founding of the Socialist Party, Rama openly declared that he will never demand Veliaj's release from prison.
" Today we are not like the others. Precisely because we are not like any of the others, we do not demand the release of the political prisoner, Erion Veliaj, because this is not our issue. Because there are no political prisoners in Albania and because, however painful his absence may be, however unfair it may seem to us, we, precisely because we are here to make history and to leave our children a different Albania, have only one extremely difficult task. The task that Fatos Nano performed best, not only by facing prison and coming out with an outstretched hand to his captor, but also by facing other humiliations, without ever letting go, without ever opening the sea gates to the socialists to overthrow Albania from scratch. But by creating the conditions that step by step we come to where we are ", he said.
Rama further emphasized that Albania is facing an important choice between the past and the future.
" Today we are at a crossroads, between the past and the future ," declared the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister further said that every socialist has 1001 reasons to say 'let's destroy the party' but according to Rama, there is one big reason to feel proud. This is because according to him, the Socialist Party is the main force that has contributed to the national cause.
" Dritëro Agolli said here what others then said in chorus after a few months. But when he said it here, he was a traitor. SP governments have often been accused of treason against the national cause. But I'm telling you one thing, that if Albania has an archive for all contributors to the national cause and if our Rilindas are at the head of that archive, you should all know very well that whoever is a socialist has 1001 reasons to say 'let's fuck the party', but there is 1 big reason to be proud, because on that list is the SP as a contributor ", Rama said, among other things.
