Prime Minister Edi Rama has called a meeting of Tirana MPs and ministers in the Prime Minister's Office at 6:00 PM.
The reason for this meeting, which comes a day after the Tirana municipal council's decision to officially dismiss Mayor Erion Veliaj, is still unknown.
Prime Minister Rama was in Austria the day before when, in an extraordinary meeting, the Tirana Municipal Council voted with 51 votes in favor to dismiss Erion Veliaj from the position of mayor. The decision comes as a result of a proposal made publicly by Prime Minister Edi Rama during the Socialist Party Assembly, where he announced the current Minister of Health, Ogerta Manastirliu, as the candidate for the leadership of the municipality.
Only two Tirana Municipality councilors stepped out of line.
The Municipal Council gathered the 3 requests for Erion Veliaj's dismissal; those of the Socialist Party, the Democratic Party, and councilor Endri Shabani, voting on them as one.
Following the dismissal of Erion Veliaj from the Municipal Council, the Prefect of Tirana District will now officially notify the Council of Ministers.
A government meeting will be held on Thursday where Veliaj is expected to be dismissed.
This political move marks a significant change in the direction of the Municipality of Tirana and paves the way for a new name at the head of the capital's local administration.
The reason why the Tirana City Council voted to dismiss Erion Veliaj is his failure to appear in office for more than 3 months. It should be noted that Erion Veliaj's failure to appear in office as mayor of Tirana was due to his arrest. He has been in prison since February 10, more than 6 months, although he himself has requested several times from the court to be investigated with a milder security measure, the black squads had refused.
