The decree granting Albanian citizenship to former New York Mayor Eric Adams came unexpectedly, bypassing the normal procedures of Albanian law. Although special cases are defined in the law and a quick grant is foreseen, as has happened with athletes or even VIPs, the enigma still remains.
Eric Adams, a politician belonging to the American Democratic Party, who came from a long experience in the NYPD, the police of the largest metropolis in the world, led New York for only one term. In the last elections, he was defeated convincingly by the socialist-democrat Zohran Mamdani. Adams, who belongs to the center politically, had a pact and close relationship with Donald Trump, in the hope of obtaining Republican votes, but in the end he did not have them with him.
Adams, however, seems to follow the path of the politician, as happens in the US in parallel with that of the political lobbyist and activist in relation to the important community lobbies that make up America.
The former mayor is active in the political battle against the left of his party and has declared himself a fighter against anti-Semitism. In one of his articles, Adams harshly attacks his Democratic colleague, the leftist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, regarding her vote in Congress against military aid to Israel.
“Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez just pledged to vote to remove missile defenses from civilians in Israel. This is not a vote against the government of Israel or Netanyahu. This is collective punishment against ten million civilians, Jews, Muslims, and Christians. The vote against missile defenses is not progressive. It is not pro-human rights. It is indefensible. There is no moral justification for leaving civilians exposed to deadly missiles aimed at them,” Adams writes.
It is clear that he is in line and close to the Jewish political and lobbying circles of the US, especially New York, which are very powerful and who are likely to support him in the continuation of his career. But what does this have to do with Albania and why does he need Albanian citizenship?
So far, we have not had cases where senior American politicians have obtained an Albanian passport, because there is no reason for it to happen: when you have the document of the most powerful state in the world, why obtain that of one of its smallest and poorest countries?
Ka shumë gjasa që kjo të mos ketë lidhje as me çështje fiskale, për të cilat mjaft të huaj kanë marrë pasaportë shqiptare, apo me biznesin. Eric Adams nuk është një biznesmen apo një sipërmarrës i ardhshëm që synon të përfitojë nga pasaporta jonë.
Arsyetimi më logjik është përfshirja e mundshme e ish-kreut të bashkisë së Nju Jorkut në rrjetin e diplomatëve “ex officio” të Shqipërisë, përkatësisht të konsujve të nderit, të cilët sipas ligjit duhet të kenë shtetësinë shqiptare.
Gjasat janë që Adams të jetë një konsull nderi në Nju Jork, dhe kjo kuptohet edhe nga shënimi i tij pas marrjes së pasaportës, të cilën e pranon se e ka marrë në statusin “honorifik”.
“I nderuar që pranoj shtetësinë nderi shqiptare, jo vetëm si një dallim personal, por si një pasqyrim i lidhjes së thellë dhe të qëndrueshme midis Qytetit të Nju Jorkut dhe popullit shqiptar. Nju Jorku është shtëpia e një prej komuniteteve më të forta shqiptare në Amerikë, punëtore, krenare dhe thellësisht të rrënjosura në qytetin tonë. E pranoj këtë nder në emër të tyre dhe në njohje të vlerave të përbashkëta që na lidhin: familjes, qëndrueshmërisë, sipërmarrjes dhe një angazhimi ndaj komunitetit.
Faleminderit Edi Ramës, Bajram Begajt dhe popullit të Shqipërisë për këtë njohje kuptimplote. Nju Jorku është kryeqyteti global dhe kjo vetëm sa forcon urën midis komuniteteve tona”, shkruan Eric Adams.
Por, më shumë se ajo që shkruan, fotoja që ka nxjerrë është shumë e fortë dhe përbën një “provokacion” në kuptimin simbolik.
Adams shfaqet me një grup shqiptarësh, duke bërë shqiponjën para një flamuri kombëtar ku shkruhet “Çamëria” me shkronja kapitale. Në foto është edhe deputeti shqiptar Shpëtim Idrizi.
Është kjo foto që tregon shumë për rolin që shqiptari i ri njujorkez do të ketë në fushën e lobimit.
Në Nju Jork është prezent një lob shumë i fuqishëm grek, degë e të cilit është edhe organizata e fuqishme që mban emrin e Spiro Milos, që lobon për Himarën greke dhe Vorio-Epirin. A do të jetë Adams një zë në përballjen me këtë furi lobuese në qytetin e tij, që është qendra lobuese e botës?
Për ta ilustruar këtë, mjafton të shohësh memet që e shoqërojnë në faqen e X, ku sulmet vijnë dukshëm nga llogari të afërta me lobin grek. Njëri ka përgatitur me shpejtësi një montazh ku Adams është pas Enver Hoxhës dhe disa ushtarëve kinezë.
Një tjetër më pas është edhe më i egër: ai paraqet një foto të famëkeqit shqiptaro-vrasës Napoleon Zerva, i cili ka pozuar me gjithë tangërllëk, me diçiturën: “Çfarë është Çamëria”.
This activism seems like a coordinated move by Edi Rama to confront the strong activity that is expected soon from the progressive lobby in the US, especially regarding Himara and the demand for “minority rights”. However, drafted in the shadows, as he does, without consultation and public debate, this could also turn into an unnecessary and harmful boomerang for the country, but likely serving his long-term power.
