The government removes oil for farmers, pays for MPs: over 1.3 million lek per mandate each
While farmers will no longer have free diesel and citizens face a price that reaches 218 lek per liter, the fuel crisis does not affect everyone equally.
Those who do not directly feel this increase are MPs and ministers, for whom fuel is covered by public funds.
The decision to remove support for farmers comes in parallel with the price increase by the Transparency Board, shifting the entire burden to the consumer and the agricultural sector, which remains among the most exposed to the cost of oil.
In contrast, data provided by the Pamphlet shows that during 2025 alone, 45,567,862 lek were spent on fuel compensation for MPs.
In a full four-year mandate, this amount amounts to 182,271,448 lekë.
With 140 MPs in the Assembly, it turns out that on average, an MP receives around 325,484 lek per year for fuel alone. In four years, this figure goes up to around 1,301,936 lek for each MP.
This data comes at a time when citizens are paying the highest price in recent years for oil, while farmers face direct increases in production costs.
According to the Assembly's analysis for 2025, the financial benefits stemming from the status of MP amount to around 200 million lekë, including reimbursements for fuel, telephones, per diems and rent, or 44.2% of operating expenses.
Meanwhile, 60 million lek were spent on trips abroad, while funds for salaries and contributions amount to around 1.2 billion lek.
In the same year, the Parliament also spent 14.5 million lek on vehicles and 23 million lek on office furniture.
The contrast is stark: while the price of oil rises and support for farmers is removed, public funds continue to guarantee fuel coverage for political representatives on a consistent basis every year. /Pamphlet
