The clash in the Municipal Council is not simply a criminal defense, but a political threat that could create a new channel within the majority of Rama's fourth term...
Sali Berisha has every right to play hard with the current conflict within the majority; the Rama-Veliaj clash, to gain political credit. Because it is a very special case: if the majority does not take the big hit now, later it will be much more difficult. Berisha, in reality, has contributed to the creation of this power of Edi Rama, by becoming a party to the attack on Veliaj. Intentionally or not, time will tell.
But Berisha is wrong when he says that Edi Rama is simply afraid of the fact that Erion Veliaj might speak, namely open the “Pandora’s box” about what he knows about government affairs. This “concern” does not exist for Rama. As he did with Arben Ahmetaj, he can neutralize this effect, whether by increasing repression against Veliaj, his family, or with mafia-type acts that we have seen these days, such as the case of Gjush in Durrës, where a bomb was “accidentally” planted in his hotel, he was “accidentally” poisoned and “accidentally” returned to prison.
For Edi Rama, Erion Veliaj is today a pure political nuisance. Veliaj's request to speak in the Municipal Council is a political challenge, because Rama has already received the preliminary vote of the SP councilors at the party headquarters, putting before them a fait accompli. Rama did this to show Veliaj that you no longer have your people in the council, because they have dismissed you.
Veliaj, overthrown, in the conditions of a difficult political, criminal and personal situation, has found the strength to say to Rama: okay, but let me speak in front of them. After all, what can Veliaj do in the Council? He will repeat the narrative he has done so far, along with the defense in the face of the accusations. A fable that Rama himself has used, because it is convenient for him to keep the justice system and SPAK under pressure.
What really worries Rama is not Veliaj's criminal defense, but his political discourse. Because, whether in strength and especially in content, if it is sustainable, it could open a real channel within Rama's majority in the fourth mandate. A channel that, unlike the LSI of 2004, which was more of a reaction to anger, could turn into a new political opportunity. A path that will initially be taken by few, but which could then attract more and more people who feel cramped in Edi Rama's mold of power.
This is, in fact, the "Pandora's box" that Erion Veliaj could open today: not blackmail for Rama, but a real political threat./ Pamphlet
