The President of the International Democratic Union (IDU), Stephen Harper, welcomed the proceedings of the Democratic Party's National Assembly, where statutory changes are expected to be approved and new members of the National Council will be introduced, describing this process as an important moment for the future of the largest opposition force in the country.
In his message to the delegates, Harper stated that the decision to convene the Renewal Assembly reflects both courage and political wisdom. According to him, strong democratic parties do not stand still, but reform their structures, expand the participation of members and adapt their vision to the challenges of the time. The IDU President praised the work of the Democratic Party for modernizing its organization and presenting a renewed political platform.
Harper emphasized that the Democratic Party remains an important pillar of the international center-right family and that the IDU will continue to support it. He underlined that an energetic and credible opposition is one of the main guarantees of democracy, while assuring that the international democratic family stands by the DP.
" Dear Chairman Berisha, members and friends of the Democratic Party, On behalf of the International Democratic Union (IDU), I have the special pleasure to convey our warmest greetings to each of you gathered at the Renewal Assembly of the Democratic Party of Albania.
This is a moment of real significance, not only for your party, but also for democratic governance throughout Albania and the wider region. The IDU was founded on the belief that free peoples, governed by accountable institutions and dynamic democratic parties, build fairer and more prosperous societies. For four decades, the IDU has united center-right parties around the world in defense of individual liberty, the rule of law, and accountable governance.
The Democratic Party of Albania is a long-standing pillar of this family, and today we stand firmly by your side. The decision to convene this Renewal Assembly reflects both courage and wisdom. Strong democratic parties do not stand still; they listen to citizens, reassess their structures, and clarify their vision to respond to the challenges of the times.
The work you are undertaking today to reform and modernize your organizational architecture, expand member participation, and present a renewed political platform is precisely the kind of institutional renewal that keeps political vitality and public trust alive.
We commend your leadership and membership for embracing this process with seriousness and determination.
A vibrant and credible opposition is one of the most indispensable assets of democracy. When the government operates without sufficient transparency, when public funds are administered without proper control, and when citizens' rights risk being subordinated to the interests of the powerful, it is up to the opposition to speak out, act decisively, and offer Albanian citizens a compelling alternative.
The Democratic Party proudly fulfills this role. Your initiatives in Parliament, your connections with communities across the country and abroad, and your commitment to European values give you both the status and the responsibility to hold government to the highest standards of democratic accountability.
The platform you present today will be the cornerstone of this effort. A program based on economic competitiveness, advancing Albania's Euro-Atlantic integration, strengthening independent institutions, and a true commitment to the rule of law will resonate with citizens who aspire to a future worthy of their potential.
The IDU and its member parties around the world will continue to offer their full support, solidarity and cooperation. You are not alone in this effort. The democratic family stands with you.
