Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has called on the European Union to unite in the face of wars and crises as well as the protectionist policies of US President Donald Trump, while also urging the continuation of reforms.

"We are all, even the economically largest Germany, completely alone in the open field," Merkel said at a ceremony honoring the 80th birthday of former European Parliament president Hans-Gert Pöttering.

"This is why Europe has become more important than one might think," she added.

Against the backdrop of debates about EU reform, Merkel warned that those who hold political responsibilities today must maintain "the fine balance between not too many regulations and too many regulations."

She said that one disadvantage of the Lisbon Treaty is that a European convention must be convened for major changes.

"We must be careful as the European Union not to render ourselves incapable of action," she warned.

Merkel also criticized the fact that, while the European Parliament can dismiss the European Commission from office with a vote of no confidence, unlike national parliaments, new elections would not be necessary.

"To remove someone from office and not have consequences yourself, I think it's an imbalance," she said.

Trump's visit to Britain goes off -script

During the visit, London and Washington will sign a "tech pact" for cooperation in the fields of artificial intelligence, technology and nuclear energy, while major American companies have pledged $42 billion in investments in Britain.

But the visit has already been tainted by a scandal: images of Trump with Jeffrey Epstein were projected onto the walls of Windsor Castle.

Trump's letter to Epstein, along with images of Epstein's victims, news clips and police reports, were also projected onto the castle.

The letter contained an alleged dialogue between Trump and Epstein, in which Trump calls him "buddy" and writes: "Let every day be another wonderful secret," within a simple sketch depicting the silhouette of a naked woman.

Meanwhile, earlier on Tuesday, protesters unfurled a large banner near Windsor Castle with a picture of Trump and Epstein, while later projecting several other images onto the castle.

Police arrested four people for this act.

Meanwhile, Trump's opponents are preparing for a massive protest in London.
