Democratic Party MP Jorida Tabaku has raised the alarm about the state of Albanian industry, which she described as "clinically dead".
According to her, the latest figures show that the manufacturing industry has fallen by 4.5% over the past year and by 3.5% in the first three months of this year, marking a deep regression for all sectors.
Tabaku says that this is the first time since 2009, when the global financial crisis shook economies around the globe, that production in Albania has fallen so significantly, accounting for only 7% of GDP.
"The factors have long been known: the economic model built by the government is dependent on construction and money laundering, neglecting production," she declared.
Another problem that, according to Tabaku, has hit the industry hard is the devaluation of the euro by about a third of its value, which has made it impossible to sell Albanian products in regional and European markets.
At the same time, rising costs have prevented Albanian businesses from investing in quality and innovation, thereby reducing competitiveness.
"Our pride, Albanian products, are not sold today. From the village to the industry, the production sector is being pushed out of the market. This is the result of a system that favors the minority and not the majority. This model must be changed," said the Democratic MP.
