"Europe is sleepwalking", Rama: Trump is giving it its last chance to

Rama spoke on a panel at the Hay Festival in Wales, alongside British journalist Misha Glenny, Tony Blair's early aide Alastair Campbell, and award-winning historian and author Anne Applebaum.

Donald Trump's rise to power has given Europe a "last chance to get its act together," said Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama.

The man who just secured his fourth term as Albania's prime minister warned that Europe had been "asleep" and should use Trump's presidency as an opportunity to "become a great power" on the world stage.

Referring to Trump's comments that God saved his life "to make America great again," Rama said that "the other half of the truth is that God saved him to give Europe one last chance to recover. Not just to manage the decline, but to change and seize the opportunity to become a great power in a space where other powers are emerging."

"Everyone else is doing the unimaginable except Europe," he said.

Rama spoke on a panel at the Hay Festival in Wales on Saturday, alongside British journalist Misha Glenny, Tony Blair's early aide Alastair Campbell and award-winning historian and author Anne Applebaum.

Discussing the implications of Trump's second term as US president for Europe, Rama said that "Europe is sleepwalking. It is a great opportunity and a moment to completely change the course of events and to think on a broad level."

"Preaching and talking about moral high ground and ignoring everything else will not help us find a way to emerge from this situation and reshape ourselves. [Which we must do] if we do not want to see Europe shrink and become an irrelevant force while others are emerging," Rama stressed.

The 11-day festival is held in Hay-on-Wye, the idyllic and picturesque "City of Books". The programme includes Mary Trump, Michael Sheen, Jameela Jamil and others. / Adapted from Pamphlet by Independent /
