Assembly in New York, President Begaj: Kosovo deserves its place in the UN

Begaj criticized the fact that Kosovo is not yet a member of the United Nations, calling this an injustice that must be corrected.

The President of the Republic, Bajram Begaj, delivered his speech yesterday at the General Debate of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, at a special moment for Albania that marks the 70th anniversary of its membership in the UN.

The Head of State emphasized that this anniversary of the United Nations is a reminder of the vision for dialogue and cooperation between nations and an opportunity to engage more strongly in the defense of peace, justice, and global solidarity.

"We must choose cooperation over contradictions, dialogue over division, and solidarity over indifference,"  said President Begaj, emphasizing the role of the UN as the global platform to address responses to common challenges.

In his speech, he focused on current world crises, reiterating Albania's unwavering support for Ukraine's sovereignty and condemnation of Russian aggression.

President Begaj confirmed Albania's position that the war in Gaza must end, all hostages must be released, and the humanitarian situation must be addressed urgently.

"Albania is equally committed to peace, security and stability in the Middle East. The war in Gaza must end, all hostages must be released and the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza must be addressed urgently ," said Begaj.

On the regional level, he emphasized Albania's role as a promoter of dialogue, good neighborliness and regional integration, emphasizing that the Western Balkans must remain a zone of peace and development.

The President also stated that Kosovo deserves its place in the UN General Assembly.
He also called for respect for the rights of Albanians living in the Presevo Valley.

According to Begaj, support for Kosovo's membership in the UN and other international organizations is a step towards strengthening peace and security in the Western Balkans and in Europe.

"17 years after declaring independence, Kosovo has shown through its actions that it is a responsible member of the international community, committed to peace, stability and democratic values. With strong institutions and a vital population, its contribution to regional and wider cooperation is undeniable. However, Kosovo's place in this Assembly remains unjustly empty. Recognizing Kosovo's independence, supporting its membership in the United Nations and other international organizations is an act of justice towards the people of Kosovo, it is a step that further strengthens peace and security in the Western Balkans and a contribution to the stability of Europe," said Begaj.

Begaj recalled Albania's achievements in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals, clean energy, digital transformation, advancing gender equality, and including youth in the country's development agendas.

"Albania has shown that dialogue, partnership and shared values can transform societies. We will continue to work so that our children live in a safer world, with dignity and in peace," concluded President Begaj, calling for unity, responsibility and courage in facing global challenges.
