The truth about Beethoven is revealed: DNA analysis shows he was an illegitimate

Nearly 200 years after his death, Ludwig van Beethoven's final wish has been fulfilled in a way he never could have imagined. A team of scientists has analyzed genetic material from authenticated strands of the composer's hair, revealing new details about his health, the cause of death, and even an unexpected family secret. The study, published in Current Biology , sheds new light on the medical conditions that plagued Beethoven throughout his life, though some questions still remain. While previous research suggested that lead poisoning may have contributed to Beethoven's deteriorating health, this latest DNA analysis disproves that theory.

Instead, scientists found strong evidence that hepatitis B, coupled with alcohol consumption and risk factors for liver disease, likely led to his premature death at age 56. The most surprising discovery came from Beethoven’s Y chromosome, which did not match that of his known paternal relatives. This suggests an extramarital event in his family lineage, a stunning revelation hidden for centuries. Beethoven’s health problems were well-documented throughout his life. He suffered from progressive hearing loss, which began in his late 20s and left him completely deaf by 1818. Despite this devastating condition, he continued to compose some of the most influential pieces in the history of classical music.

However, Beethoven's problems extended beyond deafness. He endured severe gastrointestinal problems including chronic diarrhea and severe abdominal pain, which worsened with age. In 1821, six years before his death, he began to show signs of liver disease, leading many historians to believe that this was a major factor in his declining health. In 1827, after months of illness, Beethoven passed away at the age of 56. At the time, there was no clear diagnosis for the root cause of his health problems. His personal physician, Dr. Johann Adam Schmidt, was equally perplexed, unable to identify why the composer's body was failing.
