The Council of Ministers approved a decision on an amendment to the law on national holidays and commemorative days, proposing to the Assembly of Albania the addition of Alphabet Day as one of our national holidays.

Albanian Alphabet Day was approved by the Assembly in February of this year and this is the first time it is celebrated as an official holiday. The initiative was taken even after the discussions at the diaspora summit.

50 delegates from 26 different cities, clubs and associations participated in the Congress of Manastir. In this Congress, the decision was adopted to accept the Latin alphabet with some changes to the letters, adapting them to the Albanian language. Albanian intellectuals from all over the world participated in Manastir.

Mid'hat Frashëri was elected president of the congress, while Luigj Gurakuqi and Gjergji Qiriazi were vice presidents, while his sister Parashqevi Qiriazi was the only woman in this congress.

According to the number and importance of the participants, the Monastery Congress was the most important event of the Albanian people at the beginning of the 20th century, where as a result of this work, on November 28, 1912, the independence of Albania was announced.

Even for the Albanians of North Macedonia, this day is a national holiday. The Museum of the Alphabet of the Albanian Language operates in Manastir, in which there are about 56 photographs of the participants and 230 documents in digital and paper form.
