The legendary Italian singer, Toto Cutugno, has passed away at the age of 80.
The virtuoso singer-songwriter passed away this Tuesday around 16:00 at the San Raffaele hospital in Milan where he had been hospitalized for a long time.
The news was announced by the Italian news agency ANSA. His manager Danilio Mancuso revealed that the artist could not cope with a serious illness. The singer's condition had been deteriorating for days.
It was 1983 when, with his guitar, he arrived on stage at the Sanremo festival and in a jacket and tie sang "Lasciatemi cantare con la chitarra in mano..." and his popularity exploded all over the world.
Forty years ago Toto Cutugno extended his success to the world by transforming it with that song, which in Sanremo was ranked only fifth.

Toto Cutugno, the pseudonym of Salvatore Cutugno, was one of the most iconic voices in Italian music. The artist, born on July 7, 1943 in Fosdinovo, has left an indelible mark on Italian and international music history, with over 100 million copies sold and chart-topping hits.
Cutugno's talent knew no bounds: as a performer of his own songs, producer and author of songs for other music giants such as Adriano Celentano. His presence at the Sanremo Festival was continuous and fruitful, participating in 15 editions and reaching the peak in 1980 with "Solo noi".
He also made an impact in Europe with the victory of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1990 with "Together: 1992", marking a historical moment that only a few Italians have managed to achieve. Born in Fosdinovo but raised in La Spezia, Cutugno had his first exposure to music thanks to his trumpeter father.
Over the years, his artistic journey has led him to explore different aspects of music, from the bands of the 60s to the solo hits of the 70s and 80s. In 1983, one of his most famous songs, "L'italiano", was born, a song that conquered Europe and the hearts of Italians.
Originally written for Adriano Celentano, it was then performed by Cutugno himself, becoming an anthem for generations. But Cutugno's journey did not stop in the 1980s. In the 1990s he continued to influence the Italian music scene, hosting TV broadcasts and organizing the Eurovision Song Contest together with Gigliola Cinquetti.
