The art of singing, playing and making the lute, one of the most precious treasures of Albanian cultural identity, has been officially included in UNESCO's list of intangible heritage in urgent need of safeguarding.
This art, developed over centuries in the northern regions and beyond, includes the "Epic of the Kreshniks" and traditional ballads, which convey the virtues of bravery, endurance, honor, loyalty, and hospitality.
The nomination process was carried out by a team of researchers, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Albanian-American Development Foundation (AADF), through field research and community sessions. The final dossier was submitted in March 2024 and meets the highest UNESCO standards.
