The family of an Australian climber who disappeared without a trace along a popular hiking trail in the Albanian Alps for 8 months is seeking clarification of the mysterious incident.

Cameron Twiss, 28, from South Australia, was reportedly hiking alone without a guide on a 17km trail between Valbona and Theth in northern Albania on October 13 last year.

Authorities discovered Twiss' personal belongings and passport in his room at a guesthouse in the city of Shkodra after a missing person alert was issued.

He had set out with a group of tourists he had met in Valbona the night before, but chose to go only a little further.

Police and rescue teams spent two weeks searching by land and air, even using drones, but found no trace of the missing Australian.

Twiss' family has hired a private investigator to investigate the incident.

“Despite continued efforts, we still have no answers,” his brother Stuart wrote. So far, Albanian police have found no evidence.

"Our family has now hired private investigators, but despite their efforts, we have not had any progress," he says.

The family has even launched a fundraising campaign that will help investigate and clarify the fate of the 28-year-old.

Mr. Twiss' disappearance sparked numerous theories, including a bear attack, a sudden accident, a kidnapping.

The Australian tourist disappeared just two months after a Lithuanian man disappeared on the same trail.

Purnima Flanagan shared her last messages with Twiss on October 12, the day before he disappeared.

In his last message sent, Twiss said he was drinking vodka with an "Albanian man, whom he had met by chance."

"This was Cameron, he loves to talk and socialize with other people," Flanagan said at the time.

He was the perfect traveler and always made friends wherever he went.

"I just don't understand how no one could have seen or heard anything. He would have made friends in that town, he was an experienced climber and very well-oriented," she said.
