A 45-year-old Albanian, declared internationally wanted for four years by Italian authorities, has been arrested in Tirana during an operation codenamed "Wanted", conducted by the State Police in cooperation with Interpol.
According to Italian media, he had a long criminal record and was considered one of the main figures in the drug trafficking network that supplied the city of Venice with cocaine. Authorities allegedly located him after his return from Dubai to Albania.
The Italian newspaper Corriere reported that investigators managed to discover the 45-year-old's whereabouts by monitoring the movements of his family members. The investigation was carried out by a working group made up of investigators from the Venice Flying Squad and the Central Operations Service (SCO), under the coordination of the Venice Prosecutor's Office.
According to Italian media, investigations revealed that the wanted man lived in Dubai, but had recently returned to Albania, which then led to the operation to arrest him in Tirana.
The 45-year-old, who lived in Mestre during the period of criminal activity, was ultimately convicted of conspiracy to traffic and distribute narcotics.
Italian investigations allege that, between 2019 and 2021, he played a leading role in the criminal organization that controlled the supply of cocaine to drug trafficking centers in Venice. According to authorities, he managed the supply channels and organized the distribution of the drug in the lagoon area.
A fugitive since 2022, the Albanian was the subject of an Interpol "red notice", issued by the General Secretariat in Lyon.
His arrest is part of the "Wanted" project, an operation coordinated by the SCO to identify and capture high-profile fugitives inside and outside Italy.
So far, the State Police has not provided official details on the operation and the procedures that will be followed for the possible extradition of the arrested person to Italy.
