Italian police uncovered a fraud scheme worth over 30 million euros that hit the historic institution "Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore", which administers the Cathedral and the main monuments of Florence.
Nine people were detained in several cities, including Italians, Albanians and other foreign nationals.
They are accused of creating false invoices and laundering money in collaboration with shell companies.
The investigations were launched in March 2025 by the Brescia Prosecutor's Office. The money was rapidly circulated between bank accounts to hide its origin.
Cash and documents were seized. The scheme was developed in collaboration with fictitious structures that received funds for restorations.
The Opera is one of the oldest and most important cultural institutions in Italy. The case has shocked the public because of its connection to national heritage.
