An agent of the Milan Local Police lost his life yesterday evening during a chase between Milan and Peschiera Borromeo. The victim was chasing an Audi Q7, which had allegedly broken through a checkpoint in the Ponte Lambro area and sped away.
The agent is identified as Francesco Imprezzabile and was 39 years old. According to the first verifications of the Prosecutor's Office, the possibility that he was intentionally hit by the vehicle is excluded. Prosecutor Francesca Crupi, who is leading the investigation, is collecting evidence, including through security camera footage, to then assess whether other legal measures will be taken. The SUV and the motorcycle have been seized.
The incident occurred at around 9:30 p.m. Imprezzabile was transported by helicopter in very serious condition to the Niguarda Hospital in Milan, where he died as a result of the serious injuries sustained in the fall.
The vehicle with the two people who did not obey the stop order was found abandoned this morning in Pioltello, not far from the scene of the accident. The driver of the SUV was identified and arrested for road murder. He is an Albanian citizen with a criminal record, who was also under the obligation to appear, Italian media writes .
"I apologize to the Italian state and his family"
"I apologize to the Italian state and his family... if I can do anything for his family." This is one of the fragments of the confession of the 25-year-old driver of the SUV, which was being pursued by Local Police agent Francesco Imprezzabile, who lost his life after crashing with his service motorcycle.
"I was behind the wheel. He ordered me to stop, but I had a few grams of hashish and I didn't want any trouble, so I drove away," he told investigators. He then added, "I didn't see him fall. I was thinking about turning myself in and I wanted to consult with my lawyer."
In the vehicle, in addition to the young driver, for whom the measure of obligation to appear results - there were also three of his friends, but none of them is currently under investigation.
The 25-year-old was detained by Local Police at a friend's apartment in Monza.
"The SUV reached considerable speed"
Milan Local Police Commander Gianluca Mirabelli stated during a press conference that the SUV "accelerated reaching a considerable speed" after the driver ignored the order to stop.
The pursuit began at around 9:30 PM on Via Vittorini. In addition to the Imprezzabile motorcycle, two other Local Police motorcycles and a Traffic Police vehicle were also involved in the pursuit, which followed the vehicle towards Peschiera Borromeo.
In the Via Milano area, colleagues lost visual contact with the motorcyclist. A little later, they found his motorcycle collapsed on the side of the road and, further on, the agent in cardiac arrest.
He was immediately transported to Niguarda Hospital, but died a short time later.
"At the moment we have strong reasons to believe that the two people arrested this morning in Monza were in the SUV. At least these two people. We will then verify if there were other people in the vehicle. Before we press charges, we want to have solid evidence," Mirabelli declared.
The detainees are “two Albanian citizens, quite young in age,” but “they have not yet been fully identified.” According to the commander, this is a detention for identification purposes.
"Fingerprint comparison will also be carried out to achieve a secure identification," he added.
Asked if the detainees have criminal records, Mirabelli replied: "It seems so."
Toxicological tests have not yet been conducted on them, "even because several hours have passed since the incident, but if necessary, they will be evaluated," he said.
"At the moment, the only measure is the detention for identification. In the coming hours, we will assess with the judicial authority, based on the technical elements that we are verifying, what other measures can be taken. I believe that there will be developments in the coming hours," Mirabelli added.
Investigation opened for road murder and dangerous departure
The Milan Prosecutor's Office has opened an investigation file for road homicide and for the new criminal offense provided for by the Italian Highway Code, that of "dangerous departure".
As part of the investigation, an autopsy has been ordered on the body of the 39-year-old, while the date of the forensic examinations has not yet been determined.
Analysis of security camera footage will be crucial in reconstructing the event.
According to a preliminary reconstruction being reviewed by investigators, the getaway vehicle may have accelerated as soon as it noticed the police presence, even though the officers had not yet signaled it to stop.
A Traffic Police vehicle also participated in the pursuit, which was behind Francesco Imprezzabile's motorcycle and did not see the moment of the crash.
For this reason, investigators still have to determine the exact cause of the accident: whether it was related to high speed, a possible accidental contact or a maneuver by the departing vehicle. /Adapted from Pamphlet /
