Another significant amount of narcotics has been seized by Greek authorities near the border with Albania, in the Igoumenitsa area. This is the second case of a large drug shipment being seized in this region in just eight days.

The operation took place in the early hours of the morning, when police stopped a rented vehicle for inspection. At its driving position was a 61-year-old Greek woman, originally from the Moskatos area of Athens.

During the search of the vehicle, officers found and seized 90 packages of marijuana, weighing a total of 96 kilograms and 74 grams. They also seized 5.21 grams of cocaine, a small amount of "chocolate" hashish, 100 euros in cash, and two mobile phones.

According to the suspicions of the Greek authorities, the seized drugs were trafficked from the Saranda area, passing through the villages of the Konispol Municipality.

Just eight days ago, in Nea Selefkia, Igoumenitsa, Greek police seized about 110 kilograms of marijuana, which was suspected to have entered from the village of Çiflik, Konispoli. In that case, a Turkish citizen was arrested.

For both cases, the Greek authorities have also informed their Albanian counterparts, specifically the Border Police Commissariat in Saranda. Meanwhile, the Albanian police have set up control groups along the green border and in maritime areas to identify persons involved in drug trafficking.

Sources from the investigation suspect that drug trafficking lines towards Greece may have been reactivated in the Saranda area. According to data, during the last 10 months in Igoumenitsa, several shipments with a total of about 540 kilograms of marijuana have been seized.

In one of the cases, drugs were discovered on a speedboat that sank during the operation, while authorities managed to arrest the driver of the vessel, a citizen from Saranda.

The phenomenon is not limited to Igoumenitsa. Greek authorities have also identified similar cases in the areas of Ioannina, Kostur and Thessaloniki, where, together with the quantities seized in Igoumenitsa, around 1.2 tons of marijuana have been seized over the last 10 months.
