Servetus the Pigeon

Distinguished figures in public life such as the esteemed professor Servet Pëllumbi belong to a time when politics, despite fierce conflict, still maintained some unwritten boundaries of language, behavior, and institutional respect.

The passing of the esteemed professor of philosophy, academic, and former Speaker of Parliament Servet Pëllumbi is not simply the loss of a significant individual in Albanian political history.

As an individual, he represents more than that: a unique way of being in public life, a code of ethics that today seems rare, almost invisible.

With his departure from this world, not only does a biographical chapter close, but a model of thinking and acting that was based on prudence, reflection, and respect for others, for differing opinions, also fades to the point of disappearance.

On an emotional level, this loss resembles a quiet but deep emptiness, because it is not a loud pain that explodes, but one that remains suspended, like a feeling of absence that is not known exactly when it begins and when it ends.

Such figures were not simply significant actors in public life, but mostly moral references for a society that sought to find its balance in a time of great upheaval.

Psychologically, societies build their security on figures who embody stability and reason. When these figures disappear, a void is created that is not easily filled by new voices, especially when these voices are more inclined towards reaction than reflection.

This is also why the loss of such a personality is not just an individual event, but a silent shock to our collective conscience.

This flight forces us to confront an unpleasant reality: the transformation of elites. Societies, in any period, are never left without an elite, but in fact change its quality.

What was once represented by figures with intellectual weight and moral authority is today increasingly replaced by profiles that are more noisy than profound and lacking real stability.

This change is not simply aesthetic, because it ultimately affects the way relationships between citizens and institutions are built, the way public responsibility is conceived, and the very idea of service to what is called the common interest.

Distinguished figures in public life such as the esteemed professor Servet Pëllumbi belong to a time when politics, despite fierce conflict, still maintained some unwritten boundaries of language, behavior, and institutional respect.

Today, these boundaries seem increasingly fragile. Public discourse is often dominated by extreme polarization, conflict, rapid and raw rhetoric, and a kind of constant performance that often replaces content.

In this context, the lack of figures who know how to build bridges and not just deepen gaps becomes even more noticeable.

This loss speaks to the changing nature of Albanian political culture itself. Every society has its archetypal figures – people who embody certain virtues and who serve as models of identification.

When these figures disappear without being replaced through serious investment by other figures of similar weight, a symbolic crisis is created, and in such cases, society loses not only its leaders, but also its narrative of what a worthy public figure represents.

Perhaps the most painful thing about this departure is the feeling that we are not just losing a good person, but a high-quality standard. And such standards, unlike individuals, are much more difficult to restore once they fall.

In the end, we are left with a question that is addressed not only to politics, but to society as a whole: are we still capable of producing figures that build, that soothe, that think beyond ourselves? Or have we entered an era where noise has replaced depth and where collective memory is becoming ever shorter?

Unfortunately, the passing of the wise professor and intellectual Servetus Pëllumbi does not give us any answers to these questions, but rather forces us to ask them, and perhaps this is the last important act of a life lived with dignity.
