Since deciding to retake the de facto leadership of the Democratic Party in September 2021, after having controlled it in the comfortable role of elected leader for eight years in opposition, Berisha has been aware that its return to power under his leadership would be a Sisyphean labor.
Because he had been consumed in power twice, closing the cycle. The first time in the position of an all-powerful party President who began with fanfare in 1992 and ended five years later with the landing of six thousand international peacekeeping forces in the country. The second time in the position of Prime Minister from 2005 to 2013, from which he left, leaving behind a balance of achievements and great deeds, especially in the first four years, but also consumption, degradation and widespread corruption in the second term, which is why he lost the elections.
Because he had the biological age and the political time that "will never, never love the children of the past, the heroes of the past, except those he himself has begotten", as Vasili Grossman writes in his famous novel "Everything Passes".
Moreover, he had the bullets of American sanctions on his feet, which was also the reason why he took to the field to reclaim the party, consciously dividing it, as he himself has claimed.
He embodied this movement in the promise of re-establishing the DP as a larger and more united, open, diverse, modern European party, with the acceptance of factions, with primaries by the membership for the selection of candidates for deputies, with the statutory sanctioning of the resignation of the chairman when the party loses the elections, etc. And with the promise of victory, the most attractive and motivating for his followers.
All of these have resulted in empty slogans in the first attempt at implementation and realization. But the most spectacular display of the trampling of the cheered norms is what Berisha is giving on the occasion of the election of the chairman. As if it were not enough that he is running again in flagrant violation of the article of the statute that provides for the unconditional resignation of the chairman when the Party loses the elections, he has decided not to have other candidates, not to have a competition. The complete opposite of what is expected from a party that considers openness, inclusiveness, competition, diversity, renewal, and the energy that debates and confrontations create within the party's programmatic and ethical framework to be vital. This is a conscious approach of reduction that cannot be explained by political science; a self-disarmament from the possibility of morally dominating a political opponent who does not make choices. Because farce cannot be fought with farce.
