Gërdec, one of the most tragic stories that corruption has produced in the history of Albania, continues to remain a monument to impunity. As more years pass since the explosion in Gërdec, where 26 innocent citizens, mostly women and children, lost their lives, 300 others were injured, and hundreds of houses and 400 properties were destroyed, the role of Sali Berisha and his son in this business is becoming clearer.
On February 17, 2007, Berisha and ministers discuss the approval of a VKM for the contract for the dismantling of ammunition in Gërdec. On March 14, 2007, Berisha delegates the Gërdec issue to Fatmir Mediu, then Minister of Defense, paving the way for what happened a year later. Sali Berisha's and Shkëlzeni's names were frequently mentioned in telephone conversations between the key witness in Gërdec, Kosta Trebicka, and Efraim Diveroli, the arms trafficker from Florida. From the disclosure of telephone records, Efraim Diveroli declared that Berisha and Shkëlzeni are the heads of the mafia that controlled Gërdec.
The secretary of Aldo Bumçi, at the time Minister of Justice, testified about Shkëlzeni's visits to Bumçi's office and the latter's reporting to Shkëlzeni. The employment and death of Berisha's baxhanak in Gërdec, Muhamet Hoxha, publicly denied by Berisha, is another compromising fact. Despite this reality, three members of the Berisha family, specifically Sali Berisha, Liri Berisha and Shkëlzen Berisha have made dubious and contradictory statements to hide the implication in Gërdec. The statements have changed depending on the emergence of new facts and information. The climax was the denial of the baxhanak, where Liri Berisha came on stage, declaring that Berisha had never been introduced to his baxhanak who worked in the weapons dismantling factory in Gërdec. Meanwhile, Berisha declared on March 19, 2008 in Parliament that he was saddened to have met the baxhanak.

-15 mars 2008, Sali Berisha: Deri tani janë identifikuar 3 viktima: Rajmonda Tudi, 40 vjeç, Mehmet Hoxha, 59 vjeç, Jetmir Kolloshi, 19 vjeç, ndërsa dy viktima janë ende të paidentifikuara...”.
-19 mars 2008, Sali Berisha: Unë, Sali Berisha, deklaroj këtu para Parlamentit, para çdo shqiptari se nuk kam pasur në mënyrë kategorike, absolute asnjë dijeni për poligonin e Gërdecit, sepse ligjet që ju keni bërë vetë, përjashtojnë totalisht Kryeministrin e vendit për vendndodhjen, dislokimin e reparteve ushtarake, sepse këto ligje janë këtu. Ishte reparti i tankeve. Ju jeni fatkëqij se nuk i pyesni ish-kryeministrat tuaj që i keni disa aty. Kryeministri di vetëm repartin që viziton. Kaq di Kryeministri, sepse Kryeministri nuk ka asnjë tagër as për vendndodhjet, as për vetëzhvendosjet e reparteve ushtarake. Ligjet e vendit, dislokimin e Forcave të Armatosura, vendndodhjen e tyre ia japin Shtabit të Përgjithshëm, ministrit të Mbrojtjes dhe Presidentit të Republikës. Ky është ligji dhe vetëm ky. Meqenëse ju doni të dini këtë, unë nuk mund të marr asnjë vendim si Qeveri për asnjë vendndodhje, për asnjë dislokim, në qoftë se përpara nuk ka një vendim për t’i nxjerrë nga plani i shpalosjes së forcave.
-19 mars 2008, Sali Berisha: (Mohon dijeninë për Gërdecin, por i ka dërguar një letër gazetës The New York Times) ... Katër muaj më parë, një gazetar që nuk është më në atë gazetë, në New York Times, vjen në Shqipëri, takon ministrin Fatmir Mediu dhe i thotë: “Zotëri, kam ardhur të bëj një hetim. Dua të hetoj për një aferë armësh.” Posi, i thotë ky, urdhëroni! Ç’ishte kjo aferë? Afera e tregtimit të armëve me një kompani nga Florida.... Atëherë unë i bëj një letër gazetës, duke i thënë këto fjalë: “Të nderuar zotërinj, ky gazetar që në regjistrimin e dy njerëzve, të cilët kërkojnë ta korruptojnë me një prostitutë apo me 25 mijë dollarë një punonjës tonin, kërkon të përdorë këtë si dëshmi”. Unë të inkurajoj të botosh në gazetën tënde dhe ku të duash, çdo fakt me të cilin mund të thelbësosh, mund të faktosh çdo implikim të Kryeministrit dhe të djalit të tij në çdo aferë, por jo këtë. Botojeni! Kush të dojë verifikime, janë letrat në zyrën time. Tani, gënjeu Diveroli? Absolutisht, jo! Diveroli nuk gënjeu, por jam i bindur që një nga këta mafiozë shqiptarë përdori emrin tim, siç gjej çdo muaj të përdoret rëndom, kur shkojnë e paraqiten dhe thonë se kanë mbështetjen e Kryeministrit, por në të gjitha rastet, tender s’fiton kush, dhe ky është një mashtrim që thua ti. Ai që fiton tender, të jesh i bindur, ai merr dënimin mbrapa.

She stayed in England in emigration for 8 years and returned, as I know, in September with a husband, whom I, unfortunately, and I feel sorry, never got to meet. I tell you the truth, I am sad and sorry. This is the story of a man who went to earn a living and remained like the other victims.
-April 15, 2008: Liri Berisha: The problem was that he never had the chance to meet her. They (the sister and her husband who died in Gërdec) had only been here for three months. Saliu read the name there and I said "black, how could we not have said it".
-March 2008, Shkëlzen Berisha: “All my knowledge about the matter in question consists of this episode: During the summer (I don’t remember the date), a friend of mine asked me to meet a person named Kosta Trebicka, for a concern of the latter. Subsequently, in the presence of my friend, for the first and last time, I met Mr. Trebicka. Introducing myself, Mr. Trebicka explained to me that he was the owner of an Albanian company that claimed to be subcontracted by an American company, which had a contract with the Ministry of Defense. Mr. Trebicka claimed that the representative of the American company had told him that I had asked the American company not to choose Mr. Trebicka as a subcontractor, but another company. In the presence of the person accompanying him, I told Mr. Trebicka that this was untrue; that I had never known the American citizen in question; and that I had never I suggested to him or someone else the conclusion or not of contracts in such a sphere of activity. Convinced that this was simply a fabrication, or at best a misunderstanding, I asked Mr. Trebicka to confront the American citizen to whom he referred. Mr. Trebicka told me that he was convinced that it was a matter of speculation and left without ever organizing such a confrontation. This was the first and last time that I met Mr. Trebicka. This entire conversation took place in the presence of the person who had asked me for a meeting for Mr. Trebicka.
