The United States is about to celebrate the 250th anniversary of its founding. All American missions in Brussels have worked diligently to ensure that this is a celebration worthy of this historic moment.
America's cultural and historical ties to Europe run deep, and our relationships with Belgium, the European Union, and NATO embody those ties. We believe this makes Brussels the ideal place for this celebration, and we are honored to invite our friends and allies to join us.
Europe's role in the founding of our country was essential. While the signing of our Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, was a quintessentially American event, declaring independence from British colonial rule, the document itself draws heavily on the shared civilizational history that the early colonies shared with Europe.
English philosopher John Locke, widely considered the philosophical inspiration of the American Revolution, had a major influence on Thomas Jefferson, the main drafter of the Declaration, and consequently on the document itself. His ideas are prominently featured in the Declaration's inspiring preamble, which states that "all men are created equal" and are "endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights", among which are the right to "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness".
The text goes on to emphasize that “governments are instituted” to protect these rights, deriving their “legitimate power” not from hereditary monarchies, religious alliances, or military force, but “from the consent of the governed.” These inspiring words continue to touch hearts 250 years after Jefferson penned them.
The proclamation of a free republic in the Declaration arose in the context of the European Enlightenment. The Dutch philosophers Hugo Grotius and Baruch Spinoza, the German philosopher Samuel Pufendorf, the Frenchman Baron de Montesquieu, and the Scottish philosopher David Hume all contributed to the same intellectual world from which the Declaration emerged. All of these thinkers drew on the richest intellectual traditions the world has ever known, which have their origins in ancient Greece and Rome.
The fundamental question, both then and later, was whether these lofty ideals could serve as the intellectual basis for a nation that would survive.

Ne po i ftojmë miqtë tanë evropianë të bashkohen me ne, jo vetëm si aleatë, por edhe në shenjë vlerësimi për kontributin e tyre intelektual në themelimin e vendit tonë.
Gjatë këtyre dy shekujve e gjysmë, aleancat kanë ndryshuar; armiqtë janë bërë miq dhe miqtë janë bërë armiq. Por trashëgimia jonë e përbashkët dhe idealet e Iluminizmit që frymëzuan themelimin e vendit tonë nuk janë zbehur kurrë dhe nuk do të zbehen. Që nga përfundimi i Luftës së Dytë Botërore, Shtetet e Bashkuara dhe Evropa kanë mbetur aleatët më të qëndrueshëm, të bashkuar nga këto ideale të përbashkëta.
Ne të dy e njohim personalisht Presidentin Donald Trump dhe mund t'ju sigurojmë se nuk ka pasur kurrë një president më të përkushtuar ndaj idealeve të Deklaratës së Pavarësisë, ndaj lirisë politike, lirisë së shprehjes dhe parimit të qeverisjes me pëlqimin e të qeverisurve, apo ndaj paqes dhe mirëqenies në botë. Jemi jashtëzakonisht krenarë që shërbejmë në administratën e tij.
Shtetet e Bashkuara kanë pasur një ambasadë në Belgjikë prej 192 vitesh, që nga periudha menjëherë pas themelimit të Belgjikës moderne. Ajo vazhdon të luajë një rol aktiv në forcimin e lidhjeve ekonomike, politike dhe shoqërore ndërmjet dy vendeve tona, qoftë në fushën e mbrojtjes së përbashkët, të kompanive të teknologjisë së avancuar apo të partneriteteve energjetike.
Shtetet e Bashkuara dhe Bashkimi Evropian kanë marrëdhënien më të madhe tregtare në botë. Vetëm gjatë vitit të kaluar, ne arritëm një marrëveshje gjithëpërfshirëse për kuadrin e bashkëpunimit tregtar, një memorandum mirëkuptimi për një partneritet strategjik mbi mineralet kritike, miratuam Planin e Veprimit për Mineralet Kritike dhe Bashkimi Evropian iu bashkua nismës Pax Silica, e cila synon të sigurojë së bashku zinxhirët e furnizimit që lidhen me inteligjencën artificiale. Gjithashtu, po punojmë për modernizimin e NATO-s me shpresën që ajo të mbetet shtylla kryesore e paqes dhe sigurisë në Evropë.
Kemi shumë arsye për të festuar dhe mezi presim ta bëjmë këtë së bashku me miqtë tanë të mirë këtu në Bruksel, në një mbrëmje që do të mbahet mend.
