Almost a year after the murder of Appeals Judge Astrit Kalaja, his widow, Valbona Kalaja, has publicly reacted to Justice Minister Toni Gogu, criticizing him for the lack of investment in the courts.
The reaction came after Minister Gogu published on social media footage from an inspection of the construction process of a prison in Kukës.
In her comment, Valbona Kalaja asks the minister not to focus only on the construction of prisons, but to also invest in the construction of a new building for the Court of Appeal in Tirana, describing its current condition as scandalous.
" Mr. Minister, start building a new Court of Appeal in Tirana, because the conditions of this court are scandalous. A week ago, a relative had a trial and I had to accompany her and, to be honest, I feel sorry for those judges who work in those conditions. You yourself have worked in the court and you know very well what it means. My husband always wanted a new court, because in Shkodra he worked in a court with European standards and I often think that, if he had a job in Shkodra, what happened to him would never have happened. Those people deserve to work in normal conditions, because they have a difficult job on their shoulders ," she writes.
Her comment has received a lot of attention, as it directly links the lack of adequate conditions in the judicial system to the safety of judges.
Minister Toni Gogu responded publicly, attempting to justify himself. Even though 9 months have passed since the serious act, the security of the courts remains the same. They have zero standards.
" Honorable Ms. Valbona Dema Kalaja, thank you for your message. I remember with respect and honor the contribution of the late Astri and I understand very well the concern you raise. Improving the judicial infrastructure is one of the objectives we are working on with the responsible institutions. It is not a job that can be done overnight, but it is a commitment that I consider important. I thank you for raising the concern ," the minister writes.
Astrit Kalaja was killed on October 6 last year inside the courtroom, after being shot three times by Elvis Shkambi, immediately after a verdict was announced in a property lawsuit. The incident shocked public opinion and raised strong questions about security in justice institutions.
