The death toll from the devastating earthquake that struck Venezuela has reached 920 dead, while over 3,360 people have been injured, Venezuelan authorities announced.

The President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, said that at least 172 people are still under the rubble, while more than 51,000 others are missing according to the platform created to locate them.

According to authorities, around 3,000 people have lost their homes, while nearly 1,400 buildings have been damaged, including 13 hospitals and 25 shopping malls.

Search and rescue operations continue amid the rubble. A woman was pulled alive after 36 hours under collapsed buildings, giving hope to families still waiting for news of their loved ones.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani confirmed that three Italian-Venezuelan nationals were among the dead, five people were injured and 35 others were missing. Italy has sent around 100 civil protection experts, firefighters and medical teams to assist local authorities.

Help has also arrived from Spain, which has sent search and rescue teams, dogs trained to find survivors, medical personnel and humanitarian aid. The European Union has also activated its civil protection mechanism to coordinate international support.

Meanwhile, the Venezuelan government has ordered the militarization of the state of La Guaira, one of the areas hardest hit by the earthquake, to guarantee security and facilitate emergency operations.

The earthquake, with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, is the most powerful to hit this part of Venezuela in more than a century and has caused extensive material damage, while rescue teams continue to race against time to find other survivors.
