In the history of nations, there are moments that do not arise by chance, but as a result of great confrontations between ideal and interest, between shared vision and political calculation. North Macedonia is today at one of those decisive moments that will determine its fate for decades to come. The processes of European integration, which should have been the highest expression of state unity, have become an arena where not only political maturity is valued, but also the sincerity of the national vision. Instead of serving as a path towards unification and reform, they are being used as instruments for defocusing, where the burden of integration weighs on Albanians, while the political benefits are reaped by the elite who see Europe only as a scenography for their legitimacy. This deformation of the strategic purpose risks transforming the Ohrid Agreement from a foundation of coexistence into a decoration of the system, from a document of equality into a symbol of silent marginalization. European integration cannot be understood as a political calendar, nor as a race for negotiation dates, but as a moral and state-building test for the country's internal justice. Only a state that has equality in its DNA, that sees Albanians not as an electoral number, but as a fundamental factor of cohesion, can walk with dignity towards Europe. Because real Europe does not begin in Brussels; it begins here, in the way a state respects its foundations and treats those who keep the democratic spirit alive.
Every historical moment that challenges the nation highlights the difference between state vision and political calculation. Today, in North Macedonia, the European integration process is perceived and instrumentalized in a one-sided manner as a mission of Albanian political entities and not as a national and state interest. A state that reduces the European project to ethnic frameworks has failed to build a common axis of political and civic identity. Integration into Euro-Atlantic institutions should be the strategic axis of the state, and not the electoral decorum of a party or community. On the contrary, a coordinated policy seeks to defocus the Albanian political entity from their essential national and constitutional demands. Through small projects, partial promises and technical commitments, attention is diverted from the main issues: the advancement of the constitutional status of Albanians and their equal inclusion in state structures.
In this context, one cannot help but notice the open tendency of Prime Minister Mickovski to violate the spirit of the Ohrid Agreement and to rob the Albanian cause as a means of political legitimacy. Under the rhetoric of integration and stability lies a strategy to re-dimension the constitutional role of Albanians and to shift equality towards a symbolic model. With language wrapped in populism and the politics of illusions for equality, Mickovski is trying to undo what generations of Albanians have built with labor and blood.
This project involves the fragmentation of Albanian political forces, the relativization of key factors and the undermining of any initiative for national consensus. The strategy is clear: shifting the essence of equality, neutralizing the constitutional role and creating a situation where Albanians appear equal, but are in fact captive to formality and illusion. Historia, si dikur, po përsëritet. Brezat shqiptarësh ngritën flamurin e të drejtës për barazi dhe pjesëmarrje të plotë, dhe sot përballemi me tentativë për të shuar këtë flakë. Marrëveshja e Ohrit është gurthemeli i dinjitetit kombëtar, gardiani i së drejtës për barazi, dhe çdo përpjekje për ta shndërruar në dekor simbolik është sulm ndaj identitetit dhe trashëgimisë shqiptare. Në sfidat e sotme, çdo lëvizje merr peshën e vet historike. Nuk është koha për deklarata të thjeshta, por për analizë të kujdesshme, dallim të asaj që shihet dhe asaj që fshihet nën sipërfaqe. Shqiptari i sotëm duhet të veprojë me strategji të matur, vendosmëri dhe unitet, duke mos lejuar që tendencat për fragmentim, manipulim ose relativizim të deformojnë thelbin e barazisë dhe legjitimitetin e së drejtës kushtetuese. Vetëm kështu mund të ruhet fryma e Ohrit dhe të krijohet gurthemeli i sigurt për veprime të mëtejshme që sfidojnë çdo përpjekje për të shndërruar kauzën kombëtare në iluzion formal.
Nëse sot subjekti politik shqiptar nuk ngulmon fuqishëm për avancimin kushtetues të çështjes shqiptare, nesër do të jetë vonë. Historia nuk pret; ajo kërkon veprime vendimtare. Çdo njëqindvjeçar sjell lëkundje të reja etnike dhe gjeopolitike në Ballkan, dhe shqiptarët e kanë ndjerë këtë: nga ndarjet territoriale dhe diskriminimet kushtetuese, e deri tek përpjekjet për asimilim institucional.
Integrimi europian i Maqedonisë së Veriut nuk duhet të shërbejë si alibi për të fshehur mungesën e barazisë reale. Ai duhet të jetë projekt shtetëror i përbashkët, ku çdo komunitet shihet si bashkëthemeltar, jo si figurant. Çdo integrim i pjesshëm do të mbetet vetëm dekor diplomatik, duke mbuluar pabarazinë strukturore dhe vonesën e shtetit në kuptimin e barazisë kushtetuese.
Koha kërkon që elita shqiptare politike të dalë nga roli i pjesëmarrësit dhe të marrë rolin e formuesit të procesit. Pa shqiptarët si faktor kushtetues i barabartë, Maqedonia nuk mund të jetë europiane, funksionale apo e drejtë. Kush mendon se mund të shtyjë pafund zgjidhjen e çështjes shqiptare, duhet të kujtojë: proceset mund të shtyhen, por jo të ndalen. Historia rikthehet gjithmonë për të kërkuar atë që politika ka harruar. Shqiptarët duhet të jenë ata që e shkruajnë këtë histori.
Është koha që integrimi i Maqedonisë së Veriut të kthehet në projekt kombëtar të përgjegjësisë së përbashkët, dhe jo në dekor elektoral që fsheh padrejtësitë strukturore. Subjektet politike shqiptare duhet të artikulojnë vizionin e tyre kushtetues dhe shtetformues, jo si kërkesë etnike, por si kusht për stabilitet dhe europianizim të shtetit. Vetëm një Maqedoni ku shqiptarët janë të barabartë në Kushtetutë mund të jetë pjesë e Europës, jo në letra, por në frymë.
In conclusion, integration processes are not simply bureaucratic procedures; they are a battle for the future, a test of real justice and equality. When the Ohrid Agreement becomes a set piece, when integration becomes marketing and Albanians are reduced to figures in political theater, a profound threat arises, especially when leaders like Mickovski attempt to “kidnap” the Albanian cause for personal legitimacy. This is not populist rhetoric; it is a betrayal of historical sacrifices. Albanians cannot accept being part of a scene that denies decision-making and equality. The time for action is now: to restore the Ohrid Agreement to its constitutional spirit, to impose state actions where equality is non-negotiable. Not allowing silence today is saving the future tomorrow. Only with unwavering unity, prudent strategy and courageous determination can Albanians maintain their power, defend their heritage and ensure that their cause will never become an illusion.
