In 1995, Sali Berisha was at war with many media outlets, including the Albanian section of the BBC. He had declared most of the journalists there as enemies, some as security collaborators and some as collaborators with the socialists.
A well-known character from the communist era, with the potential to perhaps replace Ramiz Ali one day, was very close to Berisha during his time as president until 1997 and had taken it upon himself to give an interview to the BBC, and to "crush" these security forces and young communists.
Berisha warned us that the terrible interview would turn the world upside down. It turned out that the interview was a stale thing with no news in it. Even boring.
-If he didn't say anything, my colleague Ylli Rakipi said. You told us he would make a name for himself.
"Star, they've taken out the best parts," he said. The BBC should be attacked as censorious.
"Why should we attack him?" Ylli said. "Let him give us the interview and we'll publish it in full, then the BBC will be ashamed of itself for what it has done."
After that, that guy hid and didn't answer the phone anymore. He had simply lied to Berisha and used his closeness to him to give an interview to the BBC, lying to him that he would make a name for himself.
More or less the same has happened with the European Union recently. Some of Berisha's deputies hold him in high hopes that they are doing a great job in Brussels and especially in the structures of the Foreign Affairs Commission through the "German cell", to undermine Albania's objective of closing the negotiations. In this half-imaginary and half-bureaucratic action, Rama's former ministers or his former associates are also involved, who "keep the press informed" daily that a smear campaign is being carried out against Albania in Brussels.
The biggest problem is that Berisha enjoyed this lie until the day the Commission officially spoke publicly and there was a huge difference between what Berisha and the Albanians lied about and what Brussels said.
Here, those who keep Berisha "on the sidelines" because they will block Albania's entry into the EU have found a new enemy to show off. They have explained that this ambassador Gonzato is to blame, since he has spoken badly about Berisha, even more cheerfully than about Albania, and this is unbearable according to them.
Perhaps Ambassador Gonzato has not said a word and has no idea what is going on behind the scenes in the corridors of Brussels to keep Berisha in Albania. Perhaps he may have heard a word, but it is certain that he is the most pro-opposition ambassador the European Union has had in Albania and the most critical of the government of all time.
He is now a victim of the lie that Berisha was fond of, that Brussels will reject Albania and that all this has been achieved thanks to his and his MPs' hard work against Albania's membership.
And since the truth is out in the open after the European Commission report, he needed an enemy. And he found the only ally the opposition has in Brussels, Ambassador Gonzato. He even accused him of slandering him personally. All of this is part of Berisha's technology to personalize an issue with an official in order to justify himself in the face of major failures. When he was declared "non grata" by the US, he personalized the sanction with Yuri Kim and George Soros. When he was sanctioned by Great Britain, he personalized it with Lulzim Basha. When he was overthrown from power in 1997, also with the support of the US, he personalized it with Bill Clinton, because he also did not give him a military base that he had requested, and so on. The only way he convinces his sheep that he is not guilty is to find a personal enemy and explain it to them simply by being angry.

The seriousness with which all the EU ambassadors in Albania have taken this attack is an excessive waste of energy, because they do not recognize Berisha's plight. They think that he really has a grudge against Gonzato. He is angry because the EU does not do what he says against Albania and since he cannot explain his failure to the democrats, he finds a victim, in this case a pro-opposition diplomat, and explains it to them. That's all.
I invite Western diplomats in Albania to calm down. Ambassador Gonzato as well. If you have a coffee with Berisha, he will tell you himself that he has nothing to do with you, but he needs that to convince his own people that his enemies are implementing it.
