US President Donald Trump orders Navy to escort oil tankers through Strait of Hormuz after escalation of war with Iran. Oil prices rise by more than 15 percent as closure of sea corridor threatens global energy supply
US President Donald Trump said on the Truth Social platform that the US Navy will begin escorting oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible. He stressed that the United States will ensure the free flow of energy to global markets and warned of further military action.
The statement comes on the third day of the war that began after joint US and Israeli attacks on Tehran. Oil prices have risen by more than 15 percent since the military strikes began. Markets reacted immediately to the threat to global supplies.
Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key energy shipping corridor through which a significant portion of the world's oil exports pass. Meanwhile, attacks on energy installations in the Gulf region have added to the pressure on supplies and raised expectations for further price increases.
Energy analysts warn that any prolonged disruption to Hormuz traffic would directly impact global fuel costs, transportation and industrial production. The US Navy is expected to increase its military presence in the area to ensure the security of the maritime corridor, while tensions between Washington and Tehran remain at their highest point in recent years.
