From December 17 to January 15, all basic products in the basket are under the monitoring of the Competition Authority to prevent price abuses.
The competition says that the monitoring will include basic products such as pasta, rice, flour, eggs, sugar, cooking oil and soft drinks.
"Monitoring aims to prevent any unjustified price increases and prohibited or coordinated practices between distributors, wholesalers and supermarket chains, to the detriment of consumers," the announcement states.
Such monitoring is carried out every year due to the tendency of merchants to significantly increase prices due to the increase in purchases by citizens since Christmas and the turn of the year.
During this year, inflation has fluctuated around 2% according to INSTAT data. Meanwhile, in November, the increase in rent and food prices had the main impact on the increase in inflation last month. According to the report of the Institute of Statistics, inflation in November was 2.1%, while last year in the same month it was 2%.
Compared to previous years, all categories of goods have experienced price increases, but rental prices are the most expensive, increasing by 4%. One of the main factors for the increase in rents, according to experts, is tourism, which has increased the demand for rental properties.
Within the food group, the highest price increases were seen in dairy products, with 4.9%, and meat products, with 2.9%.
