The Transparency Board has again imposed changes to fuel prices, increasing the price of diesel to 197 lek per liter, just one day after reducing it by 3 lek.
Two days ago, oil was trading at 196 lek/liter. Yesterday, the Board decided to reduce it to 193 lek, while today the price has increased by 4 lek, going to 197 lek/liter. A move that for many citizens seems more like a "game" with prices than a real reflection of the market.
According to the decision dated May 9, 2026, the retail price for diesel will be no more than 197 lek/liter, while the wholesale price will be 185 lek/liter. Meanwhile, gasoline will be sold retail at up to 182 lek/liter and wholesale at 170 lek/liter.
The decision came into effect today at 2:00 PM and will remain in effect until the next Board meeting.
Transparency Board Announcement:
The Transparency Board on May 9, 2026, at its next meeting, decided:
The retail price of the gasoil by-product of the SSH EN 590 standard shall be no more than 197 lek/liter, while the wholesale price shall be no more than 185 lek/liter.
The retail price of the SSH EN standard gasoline by-product should be no more than 182 lek/liter, while the wholesale price should be no more than 170 lek/liter.
The prices set by the Board will come into effect today, the 9th, at 2:00 p.m. and will be valid until the next meeting of the Board where the changes in sales prices will be reflected.
We draw the attention of every operator of wholesale and retail sales of petroleum by-products to the obligation to implement this decision.
In case of violations found by various operators, the suspension of activity will be decided.
The Ministry of Economy and Innovation, together with the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy, are committed to protecting the interests of Albanian consumers and preserving the principles of fair competition in the market.
EXPLANATION: Referring to Normative Act No. 1, Date 3.4.2026 “On an addition to Law No. 61/2012, “On excise duties in the Republic of Albania,” as amended, which provides that if the retail price for diesel is higher than 220 lek/liter, or for gasoline is higher than 200 lek/liter, the 80% excise duty level shall be applied. Based on the application of the methodology for calculating the retail price ceiling, the prices are below the limit of Normative Act No. 1, date 3.4.2026, and consequently the excise duty level shall be applied in full, 100%.
