Convinced that their armies could do anything, Putin and Trump plunged their countries into wars that failed from the start. Now both leaders are trapped in the chaos of their own making, with no clear path out.
Two aging leaders are trying to get out of disastrous wars they personally dragged their countries into. And they are failing. When Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, his goal was to change the regime in Kiev and declare victory within days. This was not a “war,” but a “special military operation.” And when US President Donald Trump launched an all-out attack on Iran, his goal was also to change the regime in Tehran and declare victory within days. This was also not a “war,” but an “excursion.”
Both decided to launch their wars without respecting existing political planning procedures, not to mention taking into account the consequences and possible secondary effects. Putin spent the COVID-19 pandemic in isolation, reading books on the history of the old Russian Empire. Then came the moment when, through the Russian Security Council, he imposed the decision on the “special military operation” , without allowing any objection. The official directly responsible for Ukraine objected, but this was ignored and he subsequently resigned.
Trump also decided to go to war, following the “quick victory” in Venezuela and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s claims that the Iranian regime would inevitably collapse under pressure. The CIA director, appointed by Trump, dismissed this optimistic scenario as a “farce,” while even the servile Vice President JD Vance expressed doubts. But the decision was made and handed over to the “minister of war,” whose comically bellicose rhetoric elicits more mockery than respect.
Now both leaders are trapped in their own self-created chaos with no clear path out. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky successfully organized his country’s defense, halting the Russian advance for four years. Meanwhile, the Iranian regime, despite the loss of its top leadership and serious damage to its conventional military capabilities, survived and established de facto strategic control over the Strait of Hormuz, using the same drone technology as the Ukrainians.

Por nuk ka përparim domethënës as drejt këtyre objektivave më modeste. Putin mund të urdhërojë ushtrinë e tij të avancojë, por ajo nuk mundet. Dronët e tyre jo vetëm që mbajnë vijën e frontit, por godasin edhe infrastrukturën energjetike dhe objektivat ushtarake thellë brenda territorit rus.
Ukraina merr ndihmë të huaj, kryesisht nga europianët, pasi Amerika është përfshirë në luftën me Iranin dhe tashmë ka shpenzuar gjysmën e rezervave të saj të raketave të avancuara. Fatmirësisht, industria ukrainase e mbrojtjes aktualisht mbulon gjysmën e nevojave ushtarake të vendit, ndërsa Rusia po bëhet gjithnjë e më e varur nga mbështetja ekonomike e Kinës dhe nga municionet e artilerisë dhe forca njerëzore nga Koreja e Veriut. At some point, these leaders’ failed wars will lead to regime change. While rising oil prices may give Putin a financial breathing space, in the long run this will not be enough for the Russian economy. Today, as the Russian population has become accustomed to the conveniences of the digital age, the potential for traditional propaganda and repression has become more limited. If Russian history is any guide, failed wars bring about political change. This was the case after Russia’s defeat in the war with Japan in 1905 and after the Soviet defeat in Afghanistan. Putin’s legacy will be defined by his failure in Ukraine.
As for Trump, he promised not to wage wars of regime change. But then he convinced himself that nothing is impossible for the American military, and now all American consumers are paying the price. Many of his supporters see him as a man who has lost his way, while the rest of the world sees him as a superpower that has discredited itself.
We know that Putin and Trump periodically have long conversations. Putin wants Trump to help him win in Ukraine; but Trump can’t, because he no longer has the cards to achieve such an outcome. At the same time, Trump may have asked Putin to help him subdue Iran; but Putin couldn’t do that even if he wanted to, because he no longer has the cards in his hand either.
Putin and Trump achieved at least one thing. The Norwegian committee that awards the Nobel Peace Prize can now work peacefully, without disturbing factors. Putin has never been considered as a candidate, while Trump, even if he was, will no longer be. /Adapted from Pamphlet /
