The sea border deal is about to close, the Greek Minister of Defense visits Tirana...

Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias will pay an official visit to Tirana on Monday, at a time when Athens seems to be increasing its efforts to bring back to the agenda one of the most sensitive topics between the two countries: the delimitation of maritime zones and the continental shelf between Albania and Greece.

According to the Greek newspaper " Ta Nea ", Dendias will meet with the Albanian Minister of Defense, Ermal Onuzi, as well as with Prime Minister Edi Rama. The focus of the visit will not only be security and defense issues, but above all the "revival" of the process leading to the signing of the compromise for sending the sea issue to the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

The visit is seen in Athens as an attempt to "pick up the thread" of the 2020 political agreement, when both sides agreed in principle to resolve the maritime border dispute through international legal channels. But four years later, the process remains frozen and without a concrete deadline.

Greek media writes that Athens and Tirana are trying to exploit the current positive climate in bilateral relations, especially after Edi Rama's recent visit to Greece and the role that Athens is seeking to take in the European integration process of the Western Balkans.

However, behind the diplomatic rhetoric, the maritime issue remains a complicated and politically sensitive file for Albania.

The 2009 agreement, signed by the Berisha government, was overturned by the Constitutional Court, which found procedural violations and problems in protecting the Albanian state interest. That decision still remains today the strongest reference point in the maritime border debate and a reminder that any new formula will pass under a strong political and legal filter.

For this very reason, the Rama government has preferred the Hague route, avoiding direct negotiations for a new political agreement. But even this route is considered risky.

In its analysis, "Ta Nea" admits that the Albanian side is hesitant, mainly due to the lack of full technical support for such a complex international legal process. According to Greek media, the possibility that Albania will receive technical assistance from Greece itself as part of its support for European integration is not ruled out.

The experts themselves, and even yesterday Artur Meçollari, stated that Albania risks losing a lot of territory in The Hague. However, Rama seems to be ready to close the deal, getting Greek support for integration. The Bblok is demanding by all means the closure of the integration chapters in 2027, to use it as a card in the next elections. And it seems that after several years of calm, now it will go back to bargaining over the maritime border. / Pamphlet
