The US-EU clash over technology is turning into a "digital cold war", where at stake are not platforms, but sovereignty, democracy and global power...
What is happening between the European Union and the United States of America is not a technical debate over algorithms, regulations or fines against 'Big-Tech'. It is a strategic clash for control of the global digital order, similar in logic to the classic Cold War, but much more sophisticated and dangerous, because it is taking place over data, information and people's minds.
Europe, aware of its industrial weakness in technology, has chosen the path of regulation: laws like the DSA and DMA are Brussels' attempt to impose limits on American giants that have built digital monopolies, influenced public discourse and accumulated power beyond any democratic control. For the EU, this is a matter of sovereignty and the protection of the democratic order. For Washington, it is a threat to American economic interests and global influence.
The American response, from diplomatic pressure to symbolic visa bans for European figures, shows that the conflict has derailed the transatlantic dialogue. The US, which has historically preached free markets and freedom of expression, is using this narrative as a shield for its companies, portraying Europe as “censoring,” while the real fear is the loss of control over the global digital architecture.
This digital cold war is paradoxical: allies in NATO, strategic partners in Ukraine, but open rivals in technology. And therein lies the danger. If the divide deepens, the world could end up with two parallel digital systems, two standards, two visions of the internet and freedom. A fragmentation that would damage not only US-EU relations, but the very idea of an open global space.
For small countries like Albania, this clash is not far off. The rules set today in Brussels or Washington will determine tomorrow how the media, economy and politics function in the Balkans as well. In this reality, the question is not who will win the digital war, but who will set its rules. And for the first time in decades, Europe is trying to be not just a terrain, but an actor. / Pamphlet
