Albania under the yoke of 1% of the population: billionaires control the Prime

From roads and tunnels to tourism, construction, healthcare, education and the media, a handful of billionaires have taken the state and the lives of citizens hostage, while politics has become their servant...

For more than two months, one of the main television media outlets in the country has launched a daily attack on UKT, the water utility company of Tirana. This refrain is no longer journalistic or informative, but offensive and repetitive. The reason has a clear background: UKT has been headquartered for years in a property belonging to one of the country's billionaires.

A few days ago, the government approved funds for the expansion of the Tirana-Durres highway. The investment will end up in the pockets of another billionaire, who will also benefit from the road tax for a long period, as happened with the Thumanë-Kashar segment. Likewise, the Llogara Tunnel will bring benefits to another billionaire, while the road behind it was built to take people to the resorts of other billionaires.

The mayor of Tirana was really punished because he did not have the support of the billionaires. For various reasons, and especially because he was not seen as acceptable by the man they have as a reference in power, they decided against him. Veliaj did not fight against them, but he was never their favorite either. On the contrary, they have an unwavering reference: Prime Minister Edi Rama, who has supported his government by having a narrow class of oligarchs as contractors of the state budget. They are engaged in public works, building permits, tourism, catering, diplomacy and media.

The bad news is that Sali Berisha's opposition is just as dependent on this part of society that controls the state budget. They finance it, support it, and secure the agreements for the necessary compromises.

In reality, Albania has handed over its fate to billionaires, or as they are commonly called, oligarchs. They are people who control everything in this country; even the creation of new parties or the financing of public figures who appear as “ghosts”. It would be more honest if these billionaires openly admitted that they are the real power of the country and faced the demands of the people. But they do not do this, because they are not the most exemplary citizens of the Republic. They are tax evaders, have connections to organized crime and do not contribute to social protection, not even for their employees.

For normal development in the country, a clear policy is needed to say "stop" to this clique, which refuses to negotiate with society, but only dictates its own conditions and favors. Laws are not made by citizens through representatives, but by billionaires: they decide where tax money will be spent, how education, healthcare, employment, administration, and even the media will be developed.

A new policy must remove from the hands of the oligarchs the monopoly over everything, as happens in European countries. They cannot have all the sectors: road construction, hotel chains, food, private healthcare, schools, universities, and now even the defense industry.

At least half of the services should be returned to the citizens and the state. Because these billionaires think only of personal gain and, unlike billionaires in developed countries, do not invest in science, health, education or employment. Today, they, afraid of the departure of the workforce, are replacing it with Asian workers, creating new social tensions.

An opposition leader who would challenge this oligarchy would bring a new spirit, a new social agreement, of course not by repeating the methods of Enver Hoxha who destroyed and robbed the rich. But if this minority continues to work against the citizens and support only the next rulers, then the curse of society may weigh heavily on them. And it is no wonder that one day they will lose everything, because in this country, everyone knows where you have hidden your money. / Pamphlet
