Joaquín Guzmán Lopez, the son of notorious Mexican drug lord "El Chapo," who is serving a sentence in the United States, has pleaded guilty in a criminal trial in Chicago to trafficking illegal substances and involvement in a criminal organization.
His brother, Ovidio Guzman, pleaded guilty in July to similar charges. The two are accused of, along with two other wanted brothers, continuing the criminal activities of their father, Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzman, the former head of the Sinaloa cartel, who is serving a life sentence in Colorado.
Joaquin Guzman Lopez, 39, was arrested in July 2024, shortly after arriving in Texas on a small private plane, along with Sinaloa cartel co-founder Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.
The latter stated that he had been deceived about the destination of his trip, claiming that Guzmán López had kidnapped him to forcibly hand him over to the American authorities.
Zambada later pleaded guilty, thus avoiding trial and the death penalty, which the US authorities decided not to seek.
The arrest of two key figures in the cartel has sparked fierce clashes between rival factions: the Chapitos (El Chapo's sons) and Zambada's gang. According to Mexican authorities, these clashes have left at least 1,200 people dead and around 1,400 missing.
Washington accuses the Sinaloa cartel of trafficking fentanyl to the United States, where the highly potent synthetic opioid has caused thousands of overdose deaths each year, increasing tensions between the two neighboring countries.
In addition to fentanyl, the four "Chapitos" are accused of trafficking tons of cocaine from Central and South America to the US, according to the indictment released in April 2024.
According to the document, they "corrupted public officials", "ordered, threatened and carried out murders, kidnappings, assaults and beatings", with victims from law enforcement, rival gangs of traffickers and even members of their own organization.
