Ukraine has dismissed Russian claims, stating that they still control the northern part of the strategic town of Pokrovsk.
The 7th Rapid Reaction Corps of airborne assault troops said it carried out attacks south of the city, where Russian troops were dominating.
Russian military commanders reported the capture of the city yesterday, with footage showing Russian soldiers in the center.
Some of the fiercest fighting along the front line in eastern Ukraine in recent weeks has been in and around the town of Pokrovsk.
There have been claims and counterclaims from Russia and Ukraine about who controls parts of the city, but Moscow is now saying it has taken it all.
"Gateway to Donetsk"
Nicknamed the "gateway to Donetsk" in Russian media, if captured, Pokrovsk would represent one of Moscow's most significant victories since Avdievka in early 2024.
It was previously an important logistics hub for Ukraine, located along the main routes used to supply frontline posts.
The loss of the city would limit Ukraine's access to the wider road network in the area, likely making it more difficult to hold neighboring areas of the territory, including the nearby Zaporizhia region.
Analysts also say that if Russia has taken the road and rail hub, it would give Vladimir Putin's forces the platform to push forward and try to conquer new territories.
