According to the Kremlin, the Russian army has completely occupied Pokrovsk, the Ukrainian mining town in the Donetsk region.
The city lies on the supply route for the Ukrainian army and was considered an important logistics center.
The Russians were determined to conquer it. Now it seems they have succeeded. The city of Pokrovsk has been captured by Putin's troops. The Russian military announced this on Monday.
Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin visited a command center on Sunday for the occasion. He was briefed by Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov on the "liberation of the cities of Pokrovsk and Volchansk," the Kremlin wrote on Telegram. Putin thanked those responsible for the "successful operations."

Why is Pokrovsky so important?
For more than a year, the Ukrainian army fought for Pokrovsk. The situation worsened day by day. The imminent fall of the city seemed likely. "We are losing Pokrovsk. The Russians have occupied the city," wrote Ukrainian parliamentarian Oleksiy Honcharenk in mid-November.
But why is Pokrovsky so important? The city was located on the supply route for the Ukrainian army and was considered a vital logistical center. Therefore, its location was of great importance for defense. Furthermore, the Donbass city is home to a coke factory, essential for steel production.
"If the city is captured, things look bleak for Ukraine."

Klemens Fischer, a geopolitics expert at the University of Cologne, explained in mid-November what a Russian invasion would mean. “Capturing the city would be a major victory for Russia, as its symbolic importance is enormous, given Kiev’s repeated statements that this fortress would not fall,” he said.
The city could also serve the Russians primarily as a winter shelter for their armed forces.
