The incident comes just over a week after another serious security incident, when a gunman attempted to enter the White House Correspondents' Association dinner.
A person was shot by law enforcement near the Washington Monument, very close to the White House, in an incident that has brought immediate security measures to the US capital.
The incident occurred in the area of 15th Street and Independence Avenue. The Secret Service confirmed that the circumstances and condition of the injured person are not yet clear. Authorities urged people to avoid the area while emergency crews responded.
According to emergency services in Washington, an adult man was transported to the hospital, while a teenager received treatment at the scene for minor injuries.
The White House was temporarily placed on lockdown, while reporters outside were escorted into the briefing room for security reasons. President Donald Trump, who was holding an event with small businesses, continued the program without interruption.
“ U.S. Secret Service personnel are on the scene of an officer-involved shooting incident at 15th Street and Independence Avenue in Washington, D.C. One individual was shot by law enforcement; his condition is currently unknown ,” the Metropolitan Police Department said.
